What is JWT Token?
JWT (JSON Web Token) is a compact, URL-safe token format used for securely transmitting information between parties. It's commonly used for authentication and authorization in web applications. A JWT token is a string that contains encoded claims about a user's identity and permissions, signed to prevent tampering.
JWT Token Structure
JWT tokens have three main components:
- **Header**: Contains metadata like the signing algorithm
- **Payload**: Holds claims about the user or session
- **Signature**: Verifies the token's authenticity
These components are base64Url encoded and concatenated with dots, creating a string like `header.payload.signature`. The signature ensures no part of the token can be altered without detection.
How JWT Works
1. A user logs in with credentials
2. The server verifies credentials and generates a JWT token
3. The token is sent to the client and stored (usually in localStorage or cookies)
4. For subsequent requests, the client sends the JWT token in the Authorization header
5. The server verifies the token signature and processes the request if valid
This stateless authentication method eliminates the need for server-side session storage, making it ideal for distributed systems and APIs.
Common Use Cases
JWT tokens are widely used for:
- User authentication and session management
- API authentication between services
- Single Sign-On (SSO) implementations
- Temporary password reset tokens
- Mobile app authentication
JWT's self-contained nature makes it perfect for microservices architectures where multiple services need to verify the same token independently.
Advantages & Limitations
**Benefits**:
- Lightweight and fast to process
- Stateless and scalable
- Works across different platforms and languages
- Supports customizable claims
**Limitations**:
- Cannot be revoked before expiration without additional mechanisms
- Larger size compared to simple tokens
- Requires secure storage on client side
- Susceptible to XSS attacks if not properly protected
Always use HTTPS when transmitting JWT tokens and consider token refresh strategies for long-lived sessions.
